Social distancing is becoming the norm (for good reason). The NBA, MLB, NHL, and Broadway have suspended their games and shows. Most businesses have canceled meetings and conferences and are encouraging working remotely. Sixty million Italians are essentially under house arrest. California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Ohio have ordered its citizens to “shelter in place” for 3 weeks. Many states and cities have shuttered schools, restaurants, and bars. The CDC advised that any gatherings be limited to less than 50 people and President Trump advises gatherings of no more than 10 people. The federal government has declared a national emergency. The WHO has declared this a global pandemic. The question my patients, friends, and family are asking is “What can we do?” The answer is a lot, both to reduce our own risks and reduce the spread nationwide. But those from 20 to 60 are also at significant risk accounting for about 40% of hospitalizations. The mortality rate estimates range from 0.6% to 4% percent and is much higher in people over 75 years old. Now, more than ever, it is critical for our population to focus on their own health and use food as medicine to bolster their own health and thereby reduce the overall burden on your health care system which is already buckling under the burden of COVID-19 layered on top of chronic disease, which affects 6 out of 10 Americans. Those with obesity are almost 3 times more likely to die. Those with a chronic disease are almost 10 times as likely to die. In some cases, they will be affected ten times more than the rest of the population, underscoring the need to protect this vulnerable group. Those with a chronic disease will face a greater threat. Scientists estimate that 40% to 70% of our population will be affected. And of course, there will be loss and death, but we will emerge in 12-18 months with a new vaccine, new medications and treatment options, and more widespread immunity.ĬOVID-19, the viral disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a global pandemic. We have had crises before including two World Wars and the Great Depression and come together as a nation with a singular purpose to solve these threats. The good news is that approximately 99% of people who get COVID-19 will survive 80% will have mild symptoms, and up to 20% will require hospitalization.īut this is still a great threat to our health and to our economy. The more we can face the threat with calm and kindness, the better we will able to survive and thrive. A time to hunker down with family, to take care of ourselves, to cook real food at home, and cherish the people and things we love. A time for us to be level-headed, open-hearted and focused on what we can do to protect ourselves, our families, our communities, and our country and be kind to each other. © 2011 USS Constitution Museum Chemical Processes: Build an Alka-Seltzer® Cannon 1 Illustrations © 2010 Stephen Biesty is an unprecedented time, a once in 100-year pandemic. Students observe the difference between the reactions of the solids when places in the water. Fill two cups halfway with warm water and place a sugar cube in one and Alka-Seltzer® in the other. Begin the lesson with students with a review of the Scientific Method (Question, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedures, Data and Analysis, and Conclusion). Load and Fire a Cannon Game or PDF 2-3 min.Gun Deck in Battle scene from Explore Old Ironsides.Outdoor environment or large room (where nothing can break or no one will be injured with a propelled plastic top).An empty 35mm film container (a Mini-Pringles® can, anything with a small diameter and with a plastic top might work, like a Mini-M&M container, Salt and Pepper shakers with a plastic top, etc.).Students will compare and contrast their material, and apply their conclusions from their experiment. Time Instructional Activity Students will conduct an experiment where they examine the effect of variables for the state of matter (physical state of the Alka-Seltzer® tablet, change of amount of Alka-Seltzer®). Students will produce at least 1 chart to track their results. Students will change the variables of this experiment at least twice to alter the final reaction. Objectives Outcomes Materials & Resources Students will learn, apply, and log the steps of the Scientific Method. Students will apply the chemical change and reaction to a challenge of loading and firing a gun, and understand the reality faced by sailors during the War of 1812 on board Constitution. Chemical Processes: Build an Alka-Seltzer® Cannon Target Grade Level: 5th-8th Time for Lesson: 90-120 minutes Overview & Major Themes In Chemical Processes - Build an Alka-Seltzer® Cannon, students will experiment using the Scientific Method to produce a chemical change using Alka-Seltzer® tablets.
